Design/Build Competition
High School Design/Build Program
Following defined criteria provided by SBE, each team completes the challenge of designing and preparing construction documents for a 96-square-foot structure. The team then secures project approval from the local building department. Both steps must be completed prior to competition day: actual construction of the structure takes place at the competition site over a two-day period.
Judging is conducted by a panel of building and construction professionals from the greater Sacramento area. Structures are judged on the students ability to perform all the functions of the project including planning and design, scheduling, overall project management and conduct, as well as craftsmanship and team work, and of course, safety.
Schools may keep the completed projects and use it themselves, or they may sell it to fund other school projects.
Over the years, many student teams have expanded beyond the basic “shed” design. Miniature castles, replicas of California missions, medieval “thatched” huts, playhouses with swings, an octagonal backyard retreat, chicken coops and many other original and innovative designs have appeared at the competition.
One of the most notable things about the competition is the enthusiasm of the students and instructors. Many of the teams spend all of the school year planning and ‘training’ for the event. And even though it is a competition, there is a definite spirit of sharing and helping each other produce the best possible structure.
